Based on a wage bill of $15,000/week (the example on this page), the Payday Super obligation since July 1, 2026 is $1,800 weekly. OverdraftMe would suggest a $15,000 business overdraft as a cash flow buffer: enter your own wage bill above for your figures.

How we work this out

Worked example (the $15,000 a week wage bill used on this page): super is 12% of wages, so $1,800 a week, $7,800 a month, or $23,400 a quarter under the old quarterly rules. A six-week buffer is $10,800, which rounds up to a $15,000 overdraft.

  • Weekly super = weekly wages x 12% (the superannuation guarantee rate since 1 July 2025).
  • Monthly obligation = weekly super x 52 / 12. Quarterly under the old rules = weekly super x 13.
  • Recommended buffer = 6 weeks of super, rounded up to the next $5,000, minimum $10,000 and maximum $150,000. The 6-week buffer and the $150,000 cap are OverdraftMe's assumptions, not ATO rules.

Industry notes (the calculator shows the one that matches your industry):

  • Hospitality businesses often have timing gaps between weekend revenue and weekly wages - an overdraft is especially critical.
  • Construction businesses frequently wait 30-60 days for invoice payment while wages and super fall due weekly.
  • Retail businesses with seasonal fluctuations benefit from an overdraft that can flex with trading conditions.
  • Professional service firms with monthly billing cycles may face a cash flow gap when super becomes due weekly.
  • Healthcare businesses with a mix of Medicare, insurance and private billing can experience payment timing gaps.
  • A business overdraft ensures super is always funded regardless of client payment timing.

What is Payday Super?

Payday Super is a major change to Australia's superannuation system taking effect on July 1, 2026. From this date, employers must pay superannuation contributions at the same time as wages - whether that's weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

Previously, businesses were required to pay super quarterly. Under Payday Super, a business that pays wages weekly must also pay super weekly. This fundamentally changes the cash flow requirements of any business with employees.

⚡ A business paying $15,000 per week in wages owes $1,800 in superannuation - every single week - since July 1, 2026.

How does Payday Super affect cash flow?

The shift from quarterly to payday super means businesses need to have super funds available at the time of each pay run - not 3 months later. For many small businesses, this represents a significant change to working capital requirements.

The most practical Payday Super cash flow solution

A business overdraft is the most practical buffer for Payday Super. Unlike a term loan, an overdraft sits in the background and is only drawn on when needed. You only pay interest on what you use.

✓ Set up your overdraft now - before July 1 - so it's ready the moment you need it. Approval takes as little as 1 hour. Don't wait until July.

Why act before July 1?

Payday Super eligibility and penalties

All employers who pay super for their employees have been subject to Payday Super since July 1, 2026. The 12% superannuation guarantee rate applies to ordinary time earnings.

Employers who fail to pay super on time under Payday Super will be subject to the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC), which includes the unpaid super amount, an interest component and an administration fee. The ATO will have enhanced visibility of super payment timing through improved data matching with super funds.
